According to an online news article posted on dailymail.co.uk, an 18-year-old woman is fighting for new adoption laws that would permit young adults to be adopted. The anonymous woman stated that she has always felt that she was “the odd one out in her family,” which has caused several mental health issues.
According to the 18-year-old woman, her desire is to have her friend adopt her. She believes that people “should have the right” to be a part of a loving family home. The woman met a 40-year-old friend who has become a “key” motherly figure, and she wants her friend to adopt her.
Unfortunately, her dream of being adopted cannot be granted as the jurisdiction in which she lives does not permit children over the age of 18 to be adopted. Some jurisdictions do not permit children over the age of 18 or individuals who have been married or in a civil partnership to be legally adopted. Moreover, both birth parents typically must consent to the adoption.
According to the young woman, she has been neglected by her biological family, which has affected her self-esteem. She says that it would be nice to have a family in her who is nice to her and where she feels wanted. The woman says she is an independent adult, but she needs and deserves to have a proper family just as other people. She is pushing for new laws permitting people aged 18 and over to be adopted.
